One of the most popular fish in the world, especially Asia, where it is from. Available in all imaginable colours and finnages. Personable, fun to keep and breed. Two males will kill each other, females might, too. A couple is usually okay in a tank with sufficient shelter. Can be kept in very small tanks, but don't do it.

Very cool fish. Spends most of the day hiding between leaves at strange angles. Moves slow, but has an enormous mouth and will not hesitate to ambush tiny fish or fry. Does not seem to be particularly aggressive though. Eats unfrozen food and supermarket shrimp cut to small pieces.

Astonishingly beautiful and hardy. My first male survived a night on the carpet. Temperate. Bubble-nester, easy to breed. The fry are surprisingly small though, smaller than betta fry, and require microscopic food.

Rather hard to tell apart between species. All small, sensitive wild bettas. Need soft water and small live food to thrive (or, in my experience, survive).
Lots of info here.

Interesting little fish from Sri Lanka. Not strikingly beautiful, but rare enough in the aquarium hobby in Europe to make them fun to have and breed. They started out very, very shy. Now, they come to the corner of the tank they know they will be fed in once they see me. Real pet fish.

My biggest failure. This was an absolute bucket list fish, but when I finally got four, they did not last long. They are fussy eaters, easily spooked, and hail from very acidic waters - the kind of acidity that renders you filter useless. It is not impossible to keep and breed them, but rain water of RO water is required.

My first fish and still a favourite. Males very colourful. Big and strong, but unfortunately very shy. May hurt themselves when startled. Breedable in warm, still, shallow water.

Like T. leerii, but seems tougher and easier to breed. Probably because this 'marble' morph is very much a man-made fish. Easy eater.

One of the funnest nano fish. Grow to maybe 3,5cm, are a bit skittish, but you can hear them throughout the room when they 'croak', hence its popular name 'croaking gourami'. When undisturbed, they build bubble nests and many fry will hatch. Feeding those is the hard part.
