A temperate fish, best kept at room temperature. Very active.

A beautiful fish if light reflects on it. Seems drap and gray but harbours a wonderful light blue. Supposedly spawn under broad-leaved plants, but remains to be seen.

Accessible and small 'oddball'. Feeds off the surface, so feed floating foods. Should be breedable in soft water. They jump and almost fly, to keep the lid closed or keep the water level at least ten cm below the rim.

Black-and-white tetra from the temperate waters of southern South America.

Pretty little tetra. Very small, maybe 2,5cm fully grown. Breedable in softwater, but fry will be the tiniest.

This is a goodlooking fish if you're into black-and-white. Named after the infamous fish publisher and tax evader Herbert Axelrod.

A small pencilfish. In my tank they school with Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi. I wonder if they think they are the same. Their pattern (see name) changes at night, when it is suddenly dotted. Bought as N. trifasciatus, but they do not have any red on them, so now tentatively relabeled at N. digrammus. Could also be N. marylinae. Let us know if you can identify them.

Perhaps the most famous and certainly the prettiest of tetras. Always abundantly available. No Amazonian community tank is complete without. Prefers soft, stained water.

One of the larger small tetra's. Has a pink hue over its grey-black flanks and fanciful fins. Quite an attractive fish.

An African tetra from the Congo river bassin. Breeding them is a science, but these are very shiny fish when they are in the mood. Grow larger than your average tetra.
